To keep your national certification as an SLP, you need to continue learning. Every three years, complete 30 hours of speech language pathology CEUs. These hours start in January after you get the CCC-SLP. For grad students, that means you can start taking and tracking your continuing education hours approximately one year after you get your master’s degree, and then you’ll have three more years before you have to report those courses to ASHA. Yes, it’s unfortunate that CEUs you might do during your clinical fellowship year don’t count. Listed below are some tips on how to get CEUs in speech language pathology.
1. Check for Eligibility
Are you eligible for Continuing Education Units or CEUs in Speech Language Pathology from ASHA? You must meet one of these conditions: Member of ASHA (includes Life Member and International affiliates). Holder of ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC). Licensed by a state or provincial body to work in speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology. Authorized by a state to work in SLP or audiology. Recognized by a national body to work in SLP or audiology. In a Clinical Fellowship under someone with ASHA CCC. Currently in a master's or doctorate program in speech-language pathology or audiology. Complete these conditions by the time a CEU course ends for it to count for certification.
2. Find Approved Continuing Education Providers
Find ASHA CEU courses that can help you achieve your educational and professional goals while also assisting you to retain certification and meet licensing renewal criteria. There are over 145,000 ASHA-approved courses available (online and in-person). To find an Approved Provider, use the ASHA CEFind service. Some of these providers may also offer free speech language pathology CEUs as a sample of their paid content.
3. Ensure That You Are On the ASHA Registry
The ASHA CE Registry tracks your speech language pathology CEUs. The ASHA Approved CE Provider will send your course details to the ASHA CE Registry if you request at course end. The CE Registry grants ASHA CEUs and keeps track of all continuing education courses you've completed through ASHA's network of Approved Continuing Education Providers in years where the applicable fee was paid.
Please keep in mind that only ASHA Certified CE Providers, as approved by ASHA Continuing Education (CE), are eligible to provide courses for ASHA CEUs. Courses that do not provide ASHA CEUs are not eligible for inclusion on your ASHA CE Registry transcript.
4. Know About The Costs
The cost of a CEU is determined by a number of factors, including:
> Your state
> The type of course (community college, webinar, online written etc.)
> Whether you go to an event, such as an out-of-state ASHA convention
> Seminars in other cities (sometimes multi-day)
There are certain free speech language pathology CEUs available. Typically, this occurs when organizations that provide paid courses offer a "perk" so that you can experience their courses. However, while free speech language pathology CEUs can help, it’s also important to select courses based on areas of expertise where you need more skill rather than just looking for free options.
5. Manage Your Time Effectively
This phase demands focus, especially if you're taking online courses for CEUs in speech language pathology. Complete 3.0 CEUs or 30 hours every three years to keep certification with ASHA. Though 36 months might seem very long, they pass quickly. You probably don't want to rush for speech language pathology CEUs near the deadline. Find CEU topics that interest you and plan time to finish these courses.
